She will include an overview of worker center organizing and advocacy on behalf of low-wage workers, including immigrants; the recent surge of union activity among Millennial-generation workers, such as online journalists, adjuncts and other contingent workers in colleges and universities, and teachers; efforts to leverage unions’ political influence (often in coalition with allies outside organized labor) to win state and local support for pro-worker initiatives, from minimum wage increases to paid leave provisions, from wage theft prohibitions to scheduling regulations; and efforts to develop tripartite wage boards to lift labor standards.
